How Does a Microwave Dryer Work?

     Microwave dryer is a new type of drying equipment that utilizes microwaves—an electromagnetic wave—to act directly on the material being processed. Microwaves can interact with the moisture molecules inside the material, causing them to generate heat and evaporate. One of the key advantages of microwave drying is that it does not require heating of any external medium. The system can start working immediately, offering high efficiency and increased processing capacity.


     In a microwave dryer, the material itself becomes the heating source. The microwaves penetrate deeply and instantly into the material, ensuring that both the interior and exterior are heated simultaneously. This eliminates the need for heat conduction from the surface to the core, resulting in rapid temperature rise and greatly shortened drying time—typically only about 1/4 of the time required by traditional methods.


     The equipment features full automatic control and a fully enclosed drying chamber, reducing manual involvement and minimizing food safety risks. During drying, microwaves also provide a sterilization effect, further ensuring product safety. Moreover, since microwaves target moisture molecules, areas with higher water content absorb more energy, enabling uniform heating and drying and improving overall product quality.


     The drying temperature can be adjusted between 40°C and 100°C. For example, when used for drying shrimp, low-temperature microwave drying helps maintain the shrimp’s natural color, flavor, and nutritional value. Additionally, microwave drying has a puffing effect: as the internal air rapidly heats and pressure builds, the material expands once the pressure reaches a certain threshold. This helps shrimp maintain a desirable texture and prevents the dried product from becoming overly firm.


Furthermore, microwave dryers operate using electrical energy, unaffected by weather or environmental conditions. They require minimal installation environment requirements and cause no pollution to either the product or the surroundings, aligning with modern environmental protection standards. As such, microwave drying is an ideal solution now and in the future for drying and sterilization applications.
